Since I'm going to watch this sure-to-be-fluff Democratic debate tonight on CNN, I figured I may as well do my first live-blog. I'll be doing it in the form of comments on this post so that anyone else who would like to may join me (although I'm completely aware I may end up just talking to myself).
I'm turning on my television at 8pm EST/ 5pm PST exactly (I can't handle pundits). Hope to see some of you then!
* I'm not really live-blogging, I guess. We'll call it live commenting for now.

Hi Jen, how are you?
I'm great. Ready to get started.
Sure!
They just referred to Texas as a "prize". Like a damn game show.
Speaking of game show- why are they still clapping?
And the contestants are...
Senator Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama!!
Still clapping
This is going to be painful
Who are these people they are taking pictures with?
"Local officials". Whatever
Campbell Brown looks like Jill Taylor - as in Tim "The Toolman" Taylor's wife
OK, Jen?
Typically, you live-blog something on the post itself, not to bury it in the comments section. I'm not bothering to watch it because, as you said, it's going to be a fluff session. Plus, I have to pick up the wife at the hospital @ 9.
The work she's done to protect Veterans? Like creating more of them by supporting the war?
Bite me Hillary
JP - truthfully - I don't know how to do that and allow my readers to participate. Maybe "live blogging" isn't the word for what I'm doing. Is there another word for this?
Either way, I'm going to do this anyway. I'm sorry you can't stay. Maybe next time
I love that Barack is bringing up NAFTA - that lemon has got to go away and I'm glad he recognizes that
"Washington has become a place where good ideas go to die". I heard him say that yesterday. New talking point!
Hillary is staring at Barack. That's creepy
What's the point of meeting with Raul Castro after changes take place. Shouldn't the visit facilitate change?
Why is a visit with the US president some kind of prize?
That was a response to Hillary
Barack "I think it's important for the United States to not only talk to its friends but also to its enemies"
Bingo. I like that answer. Talking doesn't hurt anyone
Hey jen,
Does blogger have a "Save and continue editing" option?
If so, you simply edit your post, add in your new comments, and then "Save and continue editing."
I'm not sure if there's another way, but that's how I'd do it.
You can then open your blog in another tab, and keep an eye on comments.
I put up a link in the comment section of Suzi's post, but I'm not sure if anyone will come. Jonestown readers are notorious for not clicking on links.
Yeah, there's a phrase for it: Talking to yourself.
Keep going back to the editing page (the pencil icon at the foot of the post), that is, if your setup allows you to make edits.
Failing that, start another post, making sure your settings allow you to make edits.
Hillary thinks its important to "move countries toward the world community".
Hmmm...
Why am I thinking about the New World Order right now?
Fairlane - I would have to re-publish after every comment and others wouldn't be able to participate. This seems to be working ok. It just isn't showing up on the mainpage. Anyone participating will be on the comment page anyway.
JP- I may be talking to myself, but I'm at least recording publicly what I'm thinking during this debate. It'll serve as a reminder, even if it's just for me, for later when I want to bring up something that was said.
Obama's strategy seems to be to kill her with kindness
Hillary is telling us what is different between herself and GWB, but not between herself and Obama. She's not answering the question.
I'm actually ok with that. CNN is probably just trying to start a fight
Is immigration really that big of an issue to anyone outside of the media? I don't know anyone in my personal life that is that worried about it - at least not more than the economy and war.
fairlane linked it, so I just wanted to stop by and catch your commentary. I don't have cable and so I cannot offer any live commentary on the CNN debate. So you can provide me with live updates! Thanks!
I know people who say they're worried about illegal immigration, but their reasoning never makes any sense.
You got it Suzi! Thanks for coming by.
There's really nothing that new going on. Same old answers to the same old questions. You'll be told as soon as something interesting happens.
The arguments are usually along the lines of "they're taking our jobs", when in reality, the low wages that are offered to Mexicans are the reasons those jobs are no longer available to Americans that demand decent pay. This is never openly addressed in these debates.
I am little late but I am here!!
In the name of full disclosure, I am actually watching the enhanced episode of last week's Lost.
Does that make me shallow?
I would rather watch that and experience the debate (such as it is) via your live blogging!
As if locals are the only people opposed to the border fence. Give me a break, CNN
Ugh don't get me started on the idiocy of immigration "issues"... This is how fascism works.
Fran - I don't blame you at all for watching something else. I've learned nothing new. This is basically just a way for me to rant!
Welcome to my conversation with myself! I hope you enjoy!
They get us to fight with each other so that we don't fight them. It makes sense, and it's horrible
If CNN wasn't the group that determined the questions, and instead regular people were, I doubt immigration would even be brought up
Hi Jen
Thanks for the invite!
Unfortunately I am still at work...
I am usually a day late and a dollar short on these things as I cannot watch them live...The debate is tivo'ing at home and will start watching it when I get there :)
The beauty of this lame-o-la campaign season is that you don't even have to watch the debate to know what is going on.
And what a pleasure to spend time with you!
BTW, I just noticed on your profile you live in LA. I lived in Los Feliz from 1998-2000.
Polishifter - thanks for stopping by. I completely understand if you have more important things to do. You really aren't missing anything. I'm sure you'll hear about anything important that happens (if anything at all).
Yeah - I just moved from Playa del Rey to Santa Monica. The Los Feliz area is really nice - I've been there a few times. But I'm definitely partial to the beach cities.
They keep talking about immigrants "living in the shadows". What a strange thing to say. They aren't in the shadows. They're mowing lawns, making food, and cleaning homes, and then have picnics and soccer games in parks on the weekend. Pretty out in the open to me. They just don't have paperwork or basic human rights.
That is understandable- the beach is great.
I am going to switch over for a minute and actually watch the debate during the next commercial.
This whole thing is so sad to me.
So so sad.
Then my sadness turns to outrage. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I am not sure what they are debating as I am not watching...
but with regard to immigration...we don't have an illegal immigrant problem, we have an illegal employer problem.
American and International corps fall over themselves to capture that cheap labor and offer services to illegals. Bank of America will give home loans and credit cards to illegals.
There are entire sectors and industries that use nothing but cheap, illegal labor.
The idea is that if corps and business can cut their expenses then they can offer cheaper goods and services.
So we have to ask...when was the last time the price of goods really went down? Now that Nikes are made overseas and cost $2 to make,we are still paying over $100 for a pair, not $40.
All the extra money these employer make by exploiting cheap labor here and overseas is not passed on to us in the form of cost savings, it is kept for themselves as profit.
Want to solve illegal immigraiton? Punish business and corps that hire illegal and undocumented workers and punish them hard. If there is no work they will not come.
It's that simple. Though while Republicans love to stir up the hate for all things brown, the other side of them loves the cheap labor too much to ever do anything that serious about it.
Hence you get Bush/McCain pushing guest worker amensty while the Tom Tancredos and Mitt Romneys in the RNC think the illegals should be rounded up and shipped home as a Great Wall is erected between the U.S. and Mexico.
CNN is asking if there is a downside to becoming a bi-lingual nation. Does that just assume Spanish would be the second language? How about all the other languages that are spoken in this country? This isn't about immigrants - its about Mexicans.
Fran - I know exactly how you feel
Polishifter - I couldn't have said it better myself. But the plain reality is that as long as business interests trump all, they will never be punished for anything. If the solution to a problem is to restrict the "freedom" of business, that solution will be unacceptable. Therefore, the victims are blamed and punished. Its the allusion of a solution.
Fran's mouth slowly opens and from a low rumble in her belly a full scream emerges.
Hillary looks tense and Obama looks bored.
Time to go back to Lost.
An apt metaphor for our nation.
Let's do a quick recap- we're halfway through the debate and the subjects covered have been talking to Cuba and immigration. The topics not covered: our two wars, global climate change, the economy tanking, or the expansion of the executive branch.
Disgraceful
Jen- you and your unquenchable thirst for meaningful talk.
Really now. You must reconsider.
(and this from someone watching Lost instead of the debate!)
Fran - it's looked that way the whole time. She's trying so hard to look inspirational...
Whoa - there was the first jab at Obama. She brought up the Chris Matthews thing (where his rep got flustered and couldn't come up with a list of legislative accomplishments).
I knew she couldn't resist going negative and taking cheap shots.
I know - I really need to lower my expectations
It took almost an hour, but she never fails to deliver!!
For the record - I will vote for the Dem in November, but an not inspired by either one of them.
Hillary needs to wipe that creepy smile off her face! Obama just brought up that every major newspaper in Texas endorsed him and she's smiling like a psycho! Hello! You're losing! Stop smiling!
I know how you feel - but I do think that he is so much more promising than she is. At the very least, even if it is all words, he is finding the right words which means that the ideas are not lost on him. That's a start, for me anyway.
She's just starring at Obama. It's really weird. I don't know if she's trying to intimidate him or if she is just socially awkward, but it's really bothering me.
That sort of smile is the one often seen on those taking psychotropic medications.
"If you're candidacy is going to be about words, they should be your own words". He just explained that it wasn't plagerism because the words came from a person working on his campaign. She brought it back up and is attacking him. She just got booed. I'm so tired of this shit. She can't find anything legitimate to attack him with so she'll attack with whatever she can find. I'm so over her.
She's still talking
Is she actually comparing her idea to GWB's?
Hard work? What the heezy?
She's going hoarse. How Bill of her.
Obama is just patiently waiting his turn and letting her babble herself to death. I love it.
Lost is back on...
Enjoy Lost. This will only make your blood boil
Big difference here: Obama is attacking the policy of Hillary Clinton while she attacks him.
I am tired of all of it. Which as a person committed to some kind of social justice and community is hard to say.
But it is true.
If I had my way, Gore would have run. No chance. I liked Kucinich- knew he would not win, but wanted him to have a shot at some cabinet post or his role in Dept of Peace.
Also, with all his flaws I did like Edwards.
These two leave me cold. She is easier to dissect and pull apart.
I think he has potential - and it is not the "experience" thing. I just don't think he is there yet and now the momentum is so great for him.
It just leaves me wanting all the way around.
That is an excellent point about the attacking of policy vs person.
It is very Clintonian and she is showing her worst side. Which is sad.
To his credit he is seemingly staying above it.
Ok - so the running subject list.
Covered:
-Meeting with Cuba
-Immigration
-Plagiarism
-Health care
Still waiting for:
-The wars
-The economy
-A out of control climate (over 50 people did die last week because of February tornadoes)
-Iran saber rattling
-Expanded executive
-Blown off Congressional subpoenas
-The North American Union
-And many other equally or more important issues.
Question: Does Clinton think Obama is ready to be commander in chief?
She just moved back to healthcare and blew off the question
My Republican dad just said, "She's on a stump"
Jen Clark in 2008.
That's what I am now going for.
You win - you focus on issues.
Fran - i agree with you about our former candidates. I'm hoping Gore will maybe accept a government position to take care of climate change in the next administration. Just because he doesn't want to run for President doesn't mean he won't be involved. Keep your fingers crossed!
Thanks - but never in a million years! I swear that Washington DC sucks out your soul!
Buying health care and having it provided via the government are very different things!
Hillary's plan still looks to benefit the health insurance industry above all. She has not even attempted to convince us otherwise. She's focusing on how many people are subjected under each plan.
Where does she get off pretending she has more experience than Obama? She was first lady and all her experience is in areas that are not the responsibilities of the commander in chief. She's completely full of shit and refuses to answer the question, "Why do you think you are better prepared than Barack". She can't answer. She's not.
Holy tangents. Come back, Hillary!
How is it that every time I turn to the debate she is speaking?
Her jaw looks like it is so tense it is ready to break.
Not cool.
Strident tone. Too edgy.
"I will not hesitate to act against those that intend to do America harm. That includes maintaining the strongest military in the world"
Obama quote.
Little scary.
Phew - he is speaking.
Nice smirk on her face while he speaks of the military.
It is a pity really. It is Obama's to lose -she is so over.
It's because she won't shut up.
Hillary is a hawk and much of that is due to her being so up into AIPAC money and power.
That means but one thing- war.
I agree. He's wiping the floor with her. I'm interested what the media will say. Will they be honest in their analysis or say she won so that the "battle" will continue to bring in news ratings?
She scares me for that exact reason (and a few more). I'm so happy she's coming off as such a bitch (hey, it's true)
I'm sure if it were more than just the two of us here, I would get eaten alive for that last comment - especially by Mary Ellen!
6:22 pm - 8 minutes left. They just asked their first question about Iraq. Shame on CNN
Topic change but only slightly so- who do you think he will ask to be VP?
I think about that a lot.
Have no clear view of who it might be.
Edwards? Maybe but not enough foreign policy background. Joe Biden. Experience yes. Needing many cups of STFU is the problem.
Wes Clarke? Too close to Hillary.
Same for Bill Richardson. Who has great skills and experience and packaging that sucks.
?????
The purpose of the surge has not been fulfilled - Hillary
Finally, an insightful, true statement
Honestly, this might just be a dream, but I often wonder about Gore. He's been VP before, the world loves him, and that's a fantastic position in order to really have the power to make a difference in regards to green energy and climate change. He just won a Nobel Peace Prize, assuring the ass kicking of John McCain, and if anything happens to Barack Obama, the VP would be the worst nightmare for the ones that would want him dead. He's the only person that people love more than Barack. The two of them together - unstoppable.
Gore's main reason for staying out is because he doesn't want to run again. It would be someone else's campaign - that might entice him to re-join the government
Jen Clark. Truly brilliant.
I love that idea. In fact that is the idea that must happen.
Wow.
A lot more ahead? I though this was done at 6:30pm
It would be pretty awesome, huh?
Isn't it over at 9.30???
I think CNN is full of it - my Tivo says this is almost done. I sure hope so! I've loved talking to you, but this debate is painful to watch. Hilary's stone smile is painful to watch. Her face must be killing her
Wow - an executive secrecy question!
Nope - earmarks. Boo!
Oh she is smirking again at his Google for Government remark.
She has no self management at this point. It is very sad.
Obama wants all federal spending to be easily viewed on the internet. Not too shabby.
I know. It would be sad if I didn't have the hunch that she's a pretty mean person
Jen- I am glad we got to hang out for a bit here. You already know I am a big fan of your blog.
Keep up your great work at it- you have a lot of important things to say.
I am going to head off now. Thanks for this forum! And again - great to chat a bit.
I do believe her on the fiscal responsibility thing though. I don't really know why I believe her, but I do think the economy would get better.
That said, I think a fish would be more responsible that GWB
Thanks for joining me Fran! This was a lot of fun!
I'm going to sign off in a few minutes here too. It's my dinnertime.
I'll talk to you again soon, I'm sure.
Take care!
She's starring at him again. Creepy, creepy, creepy
"Describe the moment in your life when you were tested the most"
Where did they get this from? A Myspace survey?
My dad "Why are they applauding that?" (in response to Hillary saying we all know she's had challenges). I honestly think they have the APPLAUSE lights for the audience. I'd love to find out if this is true because the applause seems so false
She's not going to pull the "choking up" thing, is she? Please tell me she's not going there
That concludes The Hillary Show!
What kind of debate gets a standing ovation?
On that note, I'm going to get some dinner. Thanks Fran for spending time with me and anyone else that reads this! I'll be back later
Hi Jen, Fran, et al -
Just joined you at the end here - I watched the second half of the debate and just read through the comments.
At the end her comment about "whatever happens I'm proud to be here with Obama" was interesting. They're lauding it as her best moment. What do you think?
I think it was so bogus. She was the one that went into personal attack mode on more than one occasion and her entire attitude throughout this whole election has indicated to me that she felt that she was entitled to the Presidency. Then this punk kid comes and beats in her 10 straight states? Please. She's not honored. She's pissed. The only reason she did that is because her advisers told her to be more humble because of the reaction people had to her not-a-concession speech after losing Wisconsin. It was a calculated move to make her look gracious.
I mean, even when it happened, it looked like an after thought to her. I didn't come naturally out of the point she was trying to make. The whole thing was one big performance, which doesn't surprise me, but does annoy me. You can't pretend to be genuine. By nature it just doesn't work.
sorry i missed it -- i went out and watched the recap
as for Ann Margret
oy
we have to get you caught up
you need to rent Tommy and Bye Bye Birdie.....
8-)
they will take your mind off bush and the inept govt for a while.
Jen Clark,
Mary Ellen is out of town, I am watching the last post for her like a hawk.
Thank You for stopping in at her blog. Stay tuned I am sure she will post a firey episode soon.
Thanks, Jen - I really enjoyed this.
Came by to see what else may have come up and to once again THANK YOU!
I guess I'm a little late, huh? :-)
Good job!
Thanks so much for the running commentary, Jen. I love your 'little country.' Keep up the good work!

CORRECTION: DEMOCRATS ABROAD ISSUES CORRECTION TO DELEGATES AWARDED TO EACH CANDIDATE
CORRECTED DELEGATE ALLOCATION:
OBAMA WINS 3 DELEGATE VOTES (6 DELEGATES)
CLINTON WINS 1.5 DELEGATE VOTES (3 DELEGATES)
Washington, DC – Today, Democrats Abroad issued a correction to the organization's Global Primary results first released on Thursday, February 21, 2008. Due to a programming error in a spreadsheet column intended to calculate the sum of votes in Barcelona, Spain, results reported for that location were incorrect. The correct calculation changes the number of delegates awarded to each candidate.
Under the Democrats Abroad Delegate Selection Plan, the results of the worldwide primary are to be applied to the Regional Caucuses once the allocation of delegates to each Caucus is made. The corrected results now allocate 2 delegates to be elected by the Americas Regional Caucus, 1 to be elected by Asia-Pacific Regional Caucus, and 6 delegates to be elected by the Europe, Middle East and Africa Regional Caucus.
With the correction, there is now 1 delegate each for Obama and Clinton in the Americas, 1 delegate for Obama in Asia-Pacific, and 4 delegates for Obama and 2 for Clinton in EMEA.
These results determine the allocation of 4.5 delegate votes at the Democratic National Convention. Senator Obama won 3 delegate votes, and Senator Clinton 1.5 delegate vote. A further 2.5 votes will be determined at the Democrats Abroad Global Convention in April. In addition, Democrats Abroad holds 4 superdelegate votes. A total of 22 delegates, each with a half vote, will attend the Convention.
The Democrats Abroad Global Primary was conducted February 5-12, 2008. Balloting took place at voting centers in over 30 countries, by mail and fax, and for the first time, on the Internet through a secure online voting system. Online ballots were cast from 164 countries and territories, from Antarctica to Zambia.
Democrats Abroad Regional Caucuses will take place in Brussels on March 15 and 16, 2008, for Europe-Middle East-Africa and in Vancouver, BC, on April 11, 2008, for the Americas and Asia-Pacific.
The Democrats Abroad Global Convention will take place in Vancouver, BC, April 12-13, 2008.
The Democratic National Convention will take place in Denver, Colorado, August 25-28, 2008.
The U.S. Presidential Election will take place on November 4, 2008. Deadlines for requesting overseas absentee ballots vary per state. To vote in the U.S. Presidential Election in November, overseas voters must request a ballot from local voting authorities in the place where they last resided in the U.S., also possible at www.VoteFromAbroad.org
Democrats Abroad also corrected other more minor errors that do not affect the delegate allocation. For a complete look at the corrected Global Primary results broken down by country committee, please visit www.democratsabroad.org
Thanks everyone! I've said this to a few people already, but next time I do this I'll be sure to give more than twenty minutes warning.
And KendelNite - thanks for the info. Very interesting
